Turret from Homeworld 2
I found the concept for this turret while browsing the awesome concept-art for homeworld 1 & 2. While there were quite a lot very impressive designs for spaceships, this turret design caught my attention. What I really like about this piece is the unusual asymetric look of the turret-section combined with the ability to completly withdraw the turret into the hull and thus provide very much protection for the guns and ammunition in case of an unexpected attack.
Comparing the initial concept from J. Aaron Kambeitz, who did some awesome work on homeworld 1 and 2, I had to change some of the designs and functionalty. In the concept this turret is pictured as a kind of spacecraft which can land at will on any surface (e.g. the hull of a capital ship) and deploy its turret and thus providing additional firepower to the unit. Although I really like this idea I kept the focus on creating a static point-defense-turret. Furthermore the concept depicts the turret with a mechanism that the turret enters the hull first. During the modeling process this mechanism revealed some problems with heavy intersections during the withdraw animation. Thus I changed some things in the design and created a deployment-system where the gun-section of turret enters the hull at last and the ammo-storage is much more protected by the tower.
